Dear All,
This is a little advanced notice of our AGM which will be held in the University on Wednesday the 30th January 2008 at 7.30pm. (Exact venue to follow)
We will be recapping the activity of the society and you will have the opportunity to stand for election to the committee. The committee is responsible for organising events and administering the society. All nominations should be sent to 9404002l@student.gla.ac.uk no later than the 23rd of January.
We will be in particular need of committee members this year as so many are 5th years who will be moving on to greater things! Of course those who want to will be welcome to stand again!! To be elected to the committee, you must be a medical student at the University of Glasgow or a practising doctor with an interest in Wilderness Medicine. Committee meetings are held approximately every 2 months and are most commonly held in the pub, which makes the whole business much more pleasurable!! Its not too much of a commitment, after all we're all busy people with PBL and Case Studies to do and what not!!
We will have the following posts on the committee this year:
President - All seeing eye with their finger on the pulse of the society - a strong and dynamic leader...
Vice President - Lacky/deputy/supervisor etc of the above
Secretary - A keen legal mind - or alternatively someone with a notepad who can take notes of what happens at meetings and write a letter or 2, or 3, or...
Treasurer - Keeper of the Society's Purse, must be able to master the intricate working of the Bank of Scotland, which believe me is a strange netherworld, possibly in a universe parallel to our own
Events Coordinator - Contacts, contacts, contacts and ideas and stuff
Representative Committee Members - No specific job but none the less vital to the well oiled machinery that is the GUWMS
Well, we hope to see you all there on the 30th and just in case there was a bribe needed, we'll be having a "social" afterwards in a reputible drinking establishment near by with food if we can scrounge it...

HMS Gannet
Well, 8 of us made the trip to HMS Gannet near Prestwick on Saturday for what was a really interesting and valuable visit.
We were given a introductory talk about the capabilities, limitations and the type of jobs which the crews respond to and then shown through the medical kit which they carry to every casualty - essentially the same as an NHS Paramedic would carry but taken into and used in a much more hostile environment!! We also saw some videos of when things go bad - quite a sobering experience.
Finally we got to see the helicopter itself. We were all struck by the dark and cramped conditions which these guys have to work in. And that was just on the ground - add to that several hundred feet and a howling gale and I think its an understatement to say that we were all impressed!
The future of SAR is uncertain but it is safe to say that with guys like Euan about, rural practitioners, mountain rescue teams, walkers, climers and sailors can rest assured that if the worst happens highly professional help is on the way.
Finally, a big thanks is due to all at HMS Gannet, and in particular Euan, for hosting us, for giving us an insight into their working life and for the professionalism and courage which they display daily.
(Sorry, no piccies - its still a MOD base and apparently they don't like cameras!!!)

HMS Gannet Visit **Members Only**
Hopefully everyone had a great Christmas and New Year break and are al refreshed and ready for Term 2... No, oh well, never mind because GUWMS has managed to arrange a visit to HMS Gannet on the 19th January from 1000 till 1200.
HMS Gannet is home to the Search and Rescue (SAR) Flight which covers the West Coast of Scotland, undertaking rescue missions at land and sea and also aeromedical evacuations of serious or critically ill or injured patients.
As its an active military base, we need to know the names of who is going by the 16th January. Places will be limited to 15 or so and will be on a first come first served basis.
If you want to go and you're a GUWMS member, email me at 9404002l@student.gla.ac.uk no later than 16th January, and remember to be quick as places are expected to be very popular.
